Lecce (18" x 24")
If you ever get a chance to visit Lecce, do yourself a favor. Lecce, more fondly known as the Florence of South (which we pronounce in this here Athens of the South as "Lay-chay"), was built by the Greeks a long time ago. But it was many centuries later when the Renaissance began renovating Europe that Lecce spiffed up and decked herself in glory. It was easy to do since she had the right genetic stuff, mostly limestone, offering herself like a block of butter to a sculptor (this in no way diminishes Petra's smaller wonder as it was carved from sandstone, one of the toughest minerals on earth). Lecce arguably encapsulates the success of Italy's artistic rebirth- I challenge you to find a more ornate or aesthetically perfect city in Italy, including Florence. It's a cake decorator's dreamland with all the drapes, laurel wreaths, ruffled baby angel plumage, and distressed heads popping out from scrolling cabbage leaves. This paper painting of Lecce captures one of the saner passageways, which just goes to show how stuffed that place is with inspiration.
